  Lenten Series 2008

Singing the Songs of Zion

In our mid-week services, we will focus on the theme "Singing the Songs of Zion," with sermon ideas by Old Testament professor, Dr. Reed Lessing, from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. The Songs of Zion, while first sung by God's Old Testament people, are also songs of the Christian Church. Our series will feature Psalms and Old Testament accounts of our gracious and mighty God working to save and help His people. Hymns will also play an important role in our services.

This Week! Holding a Grudge or Extending Grace -- that's the theme of our Mid-Week Lenten Service, Wednesday, February 13, 7 p.m. In Genesis 50, we read of the incredible story of Joseph, whose brothers "intended to harm [him], but God intended it for good; to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives" (Genesis 50:20). How did God work in the life of Jesus in an even greater way? Join us as our "Singing the Songs of Zion" series continues!

  Special Voter's Meeting - June 3, 2007
St. John’s Lutheran Church

Special Voters Meeting

Sunday, June 3, 2007 10:45 a.m.

DRAFT MINUTES

President Joe Bechen called the special meeting to order. Today’s meeting is to determine an option for roofing the main body of the church.

Trustees John Rentschler and Curt Hueners shared their findings with the congregation. They have identified three options: steel with exposed fasteners, steel with raised seams and asphalt shingles (30 year or 50 year products).

Pros and cons of all three options was discussed. The condition of the roof under the current shingles is not certain. There are issues of leaking, air flow and longevity as well as cost and availability of contractors.

Labor is approximately the same under all three options. There is approximately $750-800 difference between 30 year and 50 year asphalt shingles. Contractors have been identified for the steel options but not yet for the asphalt options.

There will need to be a contractual agreement between the contractor and the church once the option is decided.

Motion was made by Helen Sprecher/seconded by Jim Litterick to pursue the option of the 50 year shingles. Motion passed by ballot vote of 44 yes and 21 no. (Gary Hueners and Karen Hueners supervised the count).

Following discussion, motion was made by Jim Rentschler/seconded by Max Schwader to authorize the trustees to determine the appropriate contractor and to choose color as best match in their opinion. Motion carried.

Max also commented that the trustees should do what they see fit with regard to the airflow issue, additional insulation, etc.

President Bechen introduced the topic of funds needed for this project. The current church budget is already in deficit and cannot accommodate this project (recognizing that this is essential and needs to be done). Motion was made by Tom Hueners/seconced by John Haak that a congregational breakfast be held on Sunday, July 1 at 8:00 a.m. as an event as a basis to request Thrivent funds. Motion passed.

The June newsletter should include a reference to the event and to the need regarding the roofing project. Thrivent could also send out postcards regarding the event.

Motion was made to adjourn by John Haak/seconded by Earl Voeltz. Meeting was adjourned at 11:45 a.m. Kathy Callies, Secretary

  Mission Fest--This Sunday!

Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things!

Indeed He has! This verse is the theme verse as St. John’s Lutheran Church, Howard, SD celebrates 125 years of God’s work to the Howard community through our congregation. We cordially invite you to participate in the activities that we are planning.

Our first event will be March 18th. Rev. Tom Baker will be our guest for an Old Fashioned Mission Fest. Pastor Baker is the Director of Development for Concordia Mission Society, St. Louis, MO. The society supports missionaries in Kazahkstan and Kyrgyzia and is affiliated with the publication of “Good News” Magazine. Prior to serving at Concordia Mission Society, Pastor Baker served as Parish Pastor for 28 years at St. James Lutheran Church (LC-MS), University City, MO. For the last 9 years he has also hosted a radio program on the Synod’s AM radio station (KFUO) called “Law and Gospel.” Pastor Baker will preach in the morning worship service (9:30am). He will lead Family Bible Class (10:30am) discussing the work of Concordia Mission Society. An old fashioned “pot luck” dinner will be served at noon. After lunch Pastor Baker will continue with a seminar on his favorite topic, Law and Gospel. Finally, in the evening he has offered to meet with area pastors to continue the Law / Gospel discussion on a deeper level.
