St. John's Lutheran Church, Howard, South DakotaSt. John's Lutheran Church of Howard, South Dakota was organized in 1882 by a group of German Lutheran pioneers who had settled in Howard and Miner County. In 1883 Pastor H. Kumpf served many of the settlers holding Christian services in homes. In 1884 the Missouri Synod continued the mission endeavors that had been started by the Iowa Synod in this area.
Records indicate that St. John's incorporated as a congregation in 1887 and became affiliated with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod at that time.
In 1887 St. John's purchased lots just north of the present church building and there built its church. The congregation then extended a call to Reverend Christian Meyer in April of 1892 who became the first resident pastor. The congregation became a member of the South Dakota District of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod at the Freeman Convention in 1906. During the years 1892-1921 a Lutheran school was in operation at the congregation. This was comprised of grades 1-8. Many of the children came from as far away as Lane and boarded at the parsonage in order to attend the Lutheran School.
As the congregation grew, it was time to think about building a new church. Thus in 1910 work was begun on a new church building. The cornerstone was laid on November 13 of that same year. The church was dedicated in May of 1911 and Reverend A.A. Breihan (then president of the South Dakota District of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod) preached the sermon. This was the first entire English service for a Missouri – Synod Lutheran church in the South Dakota District.
From the years 1921 – 1937, St. John's was the largest congregation in the South Dakota District of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
