Instructional Liturgy on the Divine Service
Eighth Sunday After Pentecost
July 30, 2006
Introduction to the Service
God speaks and we listen. God announces His mercy and we call upon Him for help and forgiveness and in thanksgiving and praise. Here is the ebb and flow of the Divine Service. God calls and by His aid we answer. This week’s service contains seven parts during which we will hear the purpose of each of those elements of our worship. As we gather together today, we continue in a pattern of worship that dates back to Adam and Eve. Yes, the words and languages have changed; but at the heart of it, it is still the same. Abraham was circumcised into the covenant, we are baptized; Moses and Aaron sacrificed animals, we receive the Lord's Supper. This is the pattern that was long ago established by God He speaks His mercy—we receive His forgiveness and respond in prayer, praise and thanksgiving.
